Here in the heart of the Green Mountains we are lucky enough to have access to some of the freshest, most flavorful berries come summertime. This year to start this patriotic summer season, I made strawberry and blueberry patriotic fruit salad over pound cake in a festive red star shaped bowl.
This isn’t about complicated baking or fancy techniques. It’s about showcasing the natural sweetness of ripe strawberries and blueberries, the crumb of a good pound cake (maybe even one from a local bakery!), and the airy delight of whipped cream. The touch of a light berry sauce adds just the right amount sweetness.
The red star bowl adds a playful, patriotic touch that’s ideal for any summer gathering. However, any color will do. I always keep reusable sets to have for each year. Whether you’re using berries you picked yourself or supporting our local farmers, this dessert is a delicious way to savor the taste of delicious berries in the summertime.

Patriotic Fruit Salad Recipe
Ingredients
Method
- First, wash the strawberries. Start by cutting the strawberry tops off. I like to cut a cone shape out of the top leaving only the sweet strawberry, not the white or green portion. After cutting this top off, cut them in into quarters depending on their size. Then add them to a large glass bowl.
- Wash the blueberries and check them for stems or leaves before adding them to your bowl. You can either cut them in half or put them in as is.
- Next, in a small dish add your water and sugar and stir until it has dissolved.
- Pour this over your strawberries and blueberries, giving it another stir to coat your fruit.
- Cover the fruit salad with plastic wrap and store it in the fridge for 2 hours. If you are short on time, you can mash up a few of the strawberries and blueberries releasing the flavor faster and cut your time down.
- Before you start your fruit salad place your bowl and beaters into the freezer. Do this for about 15 minutes.
- Add all of the ingredients to your cold bowl and whip on high speed until stiff peaks form. Note: Don't over whip this will quickly start to turn into butter. To store: Cover the whipped cream with plastic wrap and place it in the fridge until you are ready to use it. You can give it a fast mix again before use, or a gentle mix with a silicone baking spatula.
This patriotic fruit salad is great for any patriotic holiday, or any summer gathering. I hope you enjoy this recipe. If you enjoy it, let me know! For other recipes check out these recipes that are perfect for summer!
